Level 2 consists of first and second
grade students that range in age from 5 to 8 years old. This diverse age range
and abilities of students creates a family-like atmosphere. Students are
encouraged to help other students in areas that they have mastered themselves.
After all, the highest level of learning is being able to teach your knowledge
to another person. Level 2 is set up so that while Miss Freeman is working or
conferencing with a small group of students or individuals, the other students
will be working on centers/stations or independently. This teaches the children
to be responsible for their own learning, while still keeping a close watch on
their development.
Level 2 uses Everyday Math, and the
Open Court Reading program. We have wonderful science kits from Foss Science,
and take a lot of our history from The Story of the World, Volume 1. Six-traits
writing is taught in Level 2 which teaches students how to organize their
writing and share it with others using good ideas, word choice, fluency and
conventions. Students will work on learning their
Dolch Sight Words (which is
continuing from Level 1, into Level 3). These are the 220 most common words and
95 nouns used in children's literature. First and second graders will also have
a list of spelling words to learn every week that are grouped by "rules" in the
words.
Every month Level 2 studies an author. They read many books that the author has
written and analyze their writing topics and styles, as well as their artwork if
they are also illustrators. Level 2 also has a monthly poem that they read,
take apart and do word studies with. Homework packets are given to students
every Monday, and are due every Thursday morning. Students are expected to read
their "at home Open Court" books that are sent home nightly and have a parent
sign off on them. Monthly Reading Logs are given to students at the beginning
of the month and are used to record any books they read, or that are read to
them. These are due at the end of every month. If you would like to enroll your student, download our
